Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy complicate 5-10% of pregnancies and lead to serious maternal illness or death. Pre-eclampsia is the most serious of these disorders and is the second leading cause of maternal death worldwide, resulting in 76,000 maternal deaths each year. Over 99% of these deaths occur in low and middle-income countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that more than 500,000 babies also die annually due to pre-eclampsia. Pre-eclampsia-related maternal deaths result primarily from delays in diagnosis, triage, transport, and treatment, resulting in intracerebral hemorrhage (stroke) related to high blood pressure and eclampsia (seizures). Lack of community-based diagnosis and treatment is at the heart of the health inequity.
Our research team developed an app that identifies women with a greater-than-average risk of developing a potential fatal complication of pre-eclampsia such as seizures, stroke or failure of the lungs, kidney or liver.
The pre-eclampsia diagnostic kit combines a proven diagnostic model and mHealth vital signs monitoring into an all-in-one medical device for the diagnosis and treatment of life-threatening pre-eclampsia. The pre-eclampsia diagnostic kit is designed for low-resource health care settings and not available for sale in the US.
The fatal complications of pre-eclampsia are usually preventable. Too many deaths in Asia and Africa are because women are arriving at hospital having already suffered strokes or lost their baby.
